Jayalalithaa, one of the most powerful lady politicians of India and the 4 time Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, passed away at 11:30 PM IST on the 5th of December 2016.

Jayalalitha has been in Apollo since September 22 after she complained of dehydration and fever. Soon after her health deteriorated and she was diagnosed with a severe respiratory infection, followed by prolonged treatment.

She suffered cardiac arrest on 4th December, hours after her party AIADMK told media that she has fully recovered and will be returning home. She has been on ECMO support since then.

Jayalalithaa was born in 1948. She started her career as an actress in South Indian films. In 1982, she joined the AIADMK, which was founded by her mentor MG Ramachandran. She first became the chief minister of Tamil Nadu in 1991. She has ruled the state for over 15 years.

She is reverently called as "Amma" or "Mother" by her followers due to her populist and pro-poor schemes.
